What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of traditional medicine, which has been used in China and other eastern cultures for thousands of years to restore, promote and maintain good health. Its benefits are now widely acknowledged all over the world, and in the past decade traditional acupuncture has begun to feature more prominently in mainstream healthcare in the UK.

It is a treatment where fine needles are inserted into certain parts of the body. Dependant on your pain or condition, you will have fine needles inserted on one or many, different parts of the body. This is done in an effort for the pain to be released and relieve you of any problems. This is a therapeutic and preventative treatment, which has been tried and tested for a system of medicine. The Chinese and other Eastern cultures have been using Acupuncture to help restore, promote and maintain good health for over five thousand years.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of Qi, your body’s vital energy. In conjunction with needling, your practitioner may use techniques such as moxibustion, cupping and massage. They may also suggest dietary or lifestyle changes. In general, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemical messenger molecules.

The resulting changes influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being. Stimulation of certain acupuncture points has been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the analytical brain, which is responsible for anxiety. The needles used in Acupuncture are much finer than those used for injections and blood tests.

All of our needles used at Norfolk Clinic in Norwich are of single use, which are sterile and disposed of after one use. Your Acupuncture practitioner will choose certain points of your body to place the needles. Most commonly, there are between 1 to 12 points that are typically targeted and focused on in a session. Both the amount of areas and points that are targeted in an Acupuncture session will depend upon your condition. Acupuncture sessions usually last between 20 and 40 minutes. Benefiting from this treatment can often take up to 10 or more separate sessions, but often varies dependant on the patient and condition.

Your acupuncturist will use a number of different diagnostic methods to gain a complete picture of your health and lifestyle and based on this information, they will put together a personal treatment plan just for you. The frequency and number of sessions you will need depends on your individual condition. It is not unusual to need a course of treatments, but occasionally change is felt quite quickly and only two or three may be sufficient. Some people will continue to have regular treatments to maintain good health and as a preventive measure.

The Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture come with a range of benefits which can help to improve and enhance your lifestyle and health, here are just some of the reasons why you should start acupuncture.

Helps reduce headaches and migraines

Reviews and research have shown how acupuncture can help people suffering from frequent chronic tension type headaches. So, if you suffer from headaches, try acupuncture as it could decrease your headaches and headache pain intensity.

Improving chronic neck, back, knee or arthritis pain

Acupuncture is proven to be effective for improving chronic back pain, studies have shown that patients with chronic low back pain, after acupuncture, there was a significant difference in pain reported, than those who hadn’t undergone acupuncture. Further studies have shown how acupuncture improved four chronic pain conditions including back and neck pain, arthritis, chronic headache and shoulder pain.

Helps to treat insomnia

Beneficial effects of acupuncture include reducing insomnia symptoms in comparison to patients who had no treatments. Sleep medications including herbal remedies and treatments tend to come with side effects whereas no side effects of acupuncture have ever been recorded.

Improves cancer and chemotherapy recovery

Several studies have shown that acupuncture can boost immunity and speed up recovery following cancer treatments. Acupuncture treatment has also been known to enhance immunity, platelet count and prevented a decrease in health cells after radiator therapy or chemotherapy when compared to receiving no acupuncture. Further research has also shown that patients having acupuncture treatment also experienced less pain from treatments, improvements in quality of life and a decrease in various negative side effects chemotherapy like nausea.

Helps prevent cognitive decline

Some research has shown that acupuncture is effective in those suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Acupuncture can help to relieve age related cognitive decline symptoms as it helps to generate a neural response in areas of the brain, this includes putamen and the thalamus, these are particularly affected by  Parkinson’s disease.

Pregnancy, labour and postpartum health

Doctors are now recommending acupuncture as a treatment to help reduce stress, balance hormones and ease the anxiety and pain of pregnancy and labour. It’s considered as a safe treatment for many of the common symptoms during pregnancy, this is to ease the physical and emotional strain on the body, as well as after the baby is born to help with any mood, depression, mental or physical symptoms the mother may experience. It can also be used right before the baby is due to prepare body for labour.

What will I experience during the acupuncture session?

An acupuncture session will cover the following…

  • First the acupuncturist will speak with you about the pain and health-related goals.
  • They’ll usually look at a patient’s tongue and press on their vital organs to see if there is anything noticeable contributing to an imbalance.
  • The acupuncture will then use sterile, disposable small needles and will place them along specific “meridians” on the body.
  • The acupuncturist will check for ‘pulses’ on the body by gently placing their fingers or hand on the patient’s body to feel how the patient’s energy is flowing. Redness can also occur around a needle site and this is thought to be a sign that as energy is not balanced in that area.
  • The needles will usually stay in for short period of time whilst the patient’s energy is reworking and balancing itself.
  • After the needles are removed the patient can go about their day and are usually advised to drink plenty of water in order to help the detoxifying process.
